Ben-To

Type: High School Kids bear-knuckle fight for microwave food (no, really)

Synopsis: In a land where the adult population has apparently dwindled to a few corner market managers, children have resorted to hunting for bargain priced food. Its survival of the fittest, even to the point of dubbing those who work in teams as “dogs.” Only the individual can be celebrated and given the honorary title of “wolf.” Its basically a Lord of the Flies world in an Atlas Shrugged universe.

Pros: The individual characters are really the best part of the show. Sen is a badass. Ayame’s flirty character is fun. Hana’s whole deal with erotica is always funny. Ume’s violent jealousy is also always funny. Ren’s rival character is best when its juxtaposed with his clumsiness with romantic interactions. And the Sawagi twins, man, just the Sawagi twins.

Cons: This show takes itself way too seriously. The premise about kids fighting over half-priced bento screams comedy, but instead the show plays it straight a bit too much for my liking. Why? It takes all the fun out of the show. The action scenes are fun to watch at first, until the character’s start spouting generic action phrases which are best summarized as “I like to fight” and “I am not a scrub.”  Its soo cliche.

Watch it?: Don’t. Just Don’t. (2/5)

MVP: Sawagi Twins

Their fighting style is actually pretty awesome

Best Episode: Ep. 7 “Omelettits Bento 752kcal and Tent of Seafood Bento 1100kcal” (its at the pool. Sue me.)
