Dai-Shogun: Great Revolution

Type: Bad Animation

fuuun-ishin-dai-shogun-bd-eng-sub

Synopsis: You call this a “Great Revolution,” despite the fact that it’s not great and there is no revolution depicted at all.

Pros: The anime is basically a feudal Japan story with the occasional giant robot. It’s about trying to convince the illegitimate son of a shogun to take the title, all while dodging assassination attempts. That’s where the action comes in. The twist is that the main character has access to a giant robot called “Susanoo”, but only as long as he’s a virgin. That’s where the comedy comes in. And ironically enough, the person sent to protect his virginity is a busty ninja girl with curves for days in a loin-cloth kimono outfit. No wonder the shogunate died off.

Cons: The animation is horrendous. The anime uses this weird flash-hybrid style of animation that just does not work. It makes movement look awkward and fake. FAKE in an animated show about giant robots. I don’t really have a high standard for animation quality, but damn does this look bad. It took me about 3 episodes to notice, and once I did, the illusion was shattered. Story wise, the plot is fairly innocuous. The only real interesting bits are Keiichiro comically tries to lose his virginity, only for ninja girl Kiriko to stop him.  The lead is a typical hot blooded, prideful character. With the exception of the flat-chested fox demon, all the women have giant breasts. The main male villain is stereotypical evil. The only real character of interest is Hōkōin, and even she’s just a evil demon lady. All the other auxiliary characters, like the “cool” pirate, the female Shinsengumi, and the swordswoman that follows Keiichiro around, are not that interesting. That’s really the long and short of Dai-Shogun: it’s just not that interesting.

Watch it?: You can live without it (2/5)

MVP: Hōkōin

My First Girlfriend is a Gal

Type: The nice translation is “fashionable.” Yeah, let’s go with that.

Synopsis: Basically, Junichi Hashiba asks a pretty girl out on a dare from from his loser friends. Plot twist, the girl actually says yes and the two start dating. Being a high school boy, or “pervy virgin” as everyone he cares about calls him, Junichi mainly fantasizes about his girlfriend’s killer body. And while she may dress a certain way that doesn’t mean she acts a certain way, so Junichi better treat that her right, because that Yukana is a nice girl!

Pros: On the surface this show is a fan service innuendo machine. But look deeper and you’ll find a fan service innuendo machine. With class! Did I forget to mention that? Well, maybe not “class,” but with some respect for themes it covers. The obvious theme is “don’t judge a book by it’s cover,” which is typical for a show covering Gals, or “Gyaru” for you nerds. In the beginning, Junichi only judges Yukana by her appearance, thinking that’s probably “loose” because she shows a little skin and talks in slang. Someone he fantasizes about having sex with. But throughout the show, his mentality shifts from “this is a chick with a nice ass” to “I really like spending time with Yukana” (forgive the crassness, but that is how the dialogue is delivered). On the flip side, while Yukana is often the focus of fan service given her design, she’s really just a normal anime girl who happens to like fashion and likes to tease her boyfriend about his wandering eye, but still feels shy and insecure when no one’s looking (i.e. the end credits). And of course, I can’t end this section without talking about the amazing English Dub, which may be the FILTHIEST dub I’ve ever heard. My mouth was agape with what the actors where being allowed to say. It was great!

Cons: This is a T and A show. I’m sorry. I mean Tits and Ass show. Had a brain fart for a minute. The show depicts various sexual acts for at least the first 5 episodes. Most of them are Junichi dreaming about the day Yukana invites him to Pound Town, but two are specifically two other girls trying to hump Jinuchi to their own purposes. I can confidently say that this show is not safe for work, not safe for school, and I’m starting to wonder if I was even old enough to watch this. And while not actual coitus is achieved, if your not a fan of sex comedies, then don’t even bother. I should mention that this show is based on a manga, that I happen to follow, and some things are out of order. The first five episodes basically rearrange things to get the other 3 girls introduced, so it feels rushed. The last five episodes are all the characters doing stuff, which was fun, but felt filler-y. The other characters are fine, but this is the Junichi and Yukana show (except for Minoru, whose a pedophile and his lust for little girls made me uncomfortable). The show is only 10 episodes, but the only one I didn’t like but understood it’s necessity is episode 9. The penultimate episodes addresses Junichi’s insecurities about dating Yukana when her former friend from middle school, who happens to be a cute boy, takes her out for a reunion. Junichi thinks that this qualifies as Yukana cheating on him because he’s A) a teenage boy, B) in his first relationship, and C) and he’s fairly insecure about himself. Of course, the problem is all in his head, Yukana’s not the type of person who would cheat on him, and he learns to trust Yukana and their relationship more. I mean, the show does out the other boy as a creep to sorta justify Junichi, but the emotional growth still has it’s merits. It’s a solid episode, I just don’t like melodrama. Apart from that, it’s never really explained why Yukana likes Junichi, or why she said yes in the first place. But hey, he did ask, and sometimes that’s enough.

Watch it?: For the dub. And for the heart. And I guess for the pervy stuff, for you pervs out there. (4/5)

MVP: Junichi and Yukana

I’m rooting for ’em

Best Episode: Ep.7 “My First Job” (pervy, but strangely honest of sexual harassment in the workplace).

Golden Boy

Type: Very Educational

golden_boy

Synopsis: In this show that’s kinda porn, but not really, but still really close–I mean, you probably wouldn’t watch this in the office. But you probably shouldn’t be watching any anime in the office. Get back to work!– a guy whose basically a Temp helps various women by being a pathetic perv who’s a quick study.

Pros: The anime’s biggest strength is it’s serialized format. Each story is a stand alone tale about Kintaro meeting a woman at work, driving them away with his sick fetishes, but secretly helping them in a way that makes each woman fall in love with him. Most of the humor is based on sex jokes, as Kintaro has a very active libido. I watched the English dub, and Kintaro’s actor plays him very over the top. Even after seeing Kintaro save the day with his mary-sue like ability to learn, he still comes off as a weird loser in the next story. But his desire to learn about the world is admirable, and his positive personality does grow on you. And while the show is very fan service heavy, it is not pornographic, per say. The closest is probably episode 4, involving a woman and her motorcycle, which puts it under the category of a soft sore skin flix more than anything.

Cons: Kintaro’s toilet fetish. I don’t get it. People poop there man. But I guess I shouldn’t judge people’s tastes, fictional or otherwise. Other than that, Kintaro can be a little too much to handle at times, and can come off a a creep. And this is a very sex-joke heavy show, with more of the women being drawn as such. And weirdly enough, 4 out of the 6 women that Kintaro helps are condescending women of higher authority or status that are “humbled” by Kintaro’s kindness. I’m not really sure what that says about the author’s thoughts on gender dynamics, given his love for Dominant Women,  but I do know that the later part of the Golder Boy manga gets really philosophical about sex and gender, so….yeah. (p.s. the opening is poor and doesn’t really set up the show).

Watch it: It’s can be fun, but know what your getting into (3/5)

Wanna Be the Strongest in the World

Type: Idol’s becoming wrestlers exposes the business!

20558

Synopsis: The angle is that An idol decides to become a wrestlers after one of the veterans insults a fellow idol. Classic babyface run, and the idol’s celebrity helps draw a pretty huge crowd. The only real drawback is that the idol is green as grass, but she’s given a mega-push because she’s semi-well known. BECAUSE ONCE AGAIN THE COMPANY DECIDES TO BACK SOMEONE THEY WANT OVER WRESTLERS WITH ACTUAL SKILL AND TALENT THAT THE FANS CHEER. #IF HAGIWARA WINS, WE RIOT.

Pros: This got me excited, because I am a HUGE wrestling fan. The anime follows the struggle of Sakura Hagiwara, a Japanese Idol who turns into a Pro Wrestler mostly out of pride. Believe it or not, the depiction of wrestling in this show is fairly accurate. Wrestlers are very defensive about their sport, which makes the set up of the anime feasible. And wrestling training is fairly intense, with many a pro-atheletes naming wrestling work outs one of the most grueling in the industry. And there is a lot of pride in wrestling locker rooms, which makes what Hagiwara goes through, from the 100 man throws to having to earn her first win, pretty indicative of the actual wrestling industry. In fact, I wouldn’t at all be surprised if the 100 man throws test is an actual thing in Japanese wrestling. The story is surprisingly engrossing, as Hawigawa is given a “babyface,” or good guy story of the never-say-die fighter. She loses quiet a bit, which makes sense considering that she starts off as a singer, not a wrestler. The whole thing is played straight, and is a standard sports drama. And the actual action is made to look pretty good, though Hawigawa’s inner monologue does get repetitive. I liked it.

Cons: This is a boob anime. Which is fine in and of itself. But the show does its best to give you those crotch close-ups. And of course, a lot of the holds have the female wrestlers make a weirdly suggestive expression, blushing very much included. Perviness aside, the show has a lot of wrestlers that are sadly not fleshed out due to the short length of the series. So this anime become yet another fighting girl show with one-dimensional characters. The story follows 4 arcs: Sakura’s road to victory, a fight with the world champ, the introduction of Moe Fukuoka, and the battle with the mysterious Blue Panther. The Moe arc was the only one I wasn’t crazy about. Moe’s another rookie who want to become a wrestler, and is given the same treatment that Hawigawa was given, making it a bit repetitive. Not to mention that’s she’s more of a natural than Hawigawa, being a Karater champ, so there’s not real motivation to cheer for her growth. That’s another thing. Unlike in real life, the wrestling in this show is a shoot, meaning that the punches and grapples are very much meant knock out the opponent. This is kinda a shame, because I would have loved to see a show that talks about angles, and working ‘heel,” and putting guys over. But I that kind of show really would expose the business.

Watch it?: Even if I stifle my own bias, it’s still a solid show (3/5)

Koe de Oshigoto!

Type: Merry Christmas Pervs!

koegoto_small

Synopsis: This is going to be explicit. Just putting that out there. The OVA is about a girls whose essentially drafted by her older sister to be a voice actress for “eroge,” or porn games. But in order to get over her initial embarrassment, the actress needs to use her imagination. Which gets, ah, a little blue.

Pros: So it turns out this is based on a manga. Which could explain its quality. Believe it or not, this show has some quality humor. Most of it is based on the main character, Kanna’s, embarrassment over being a eroge voice actress. Not necessarily over the work, but over some of the more explicit lines she has to say out loud. Now, this part was super interesting to me, because when you think about it, all voice actors have to say some truly silly things. But as professionals, they have to get over that initial embarrassment to get the job done. But Kanna’s just starting out. To the show’s credit, Kanna’s fellow actors and production staff are depicted as completely normal people. If they walked by you on the anime street, you’d never know what they do for a living. And the eroge voice acting is shown as just another kind of acting, and I loved that Kanna chose to stick with it because she loved making a scene come to life. Another interesting aspect of the show was that Kanna’s job is sorta serving as Sex Ed for her, but she has the benefit of being surrounded by not only her older sister, but other  women who can answer some of her questions. I did appreciate that comradery.

Cons: This. Is. Porn. Well, softcore porn. HBO porn. Like I said in the beginning, Kanna is in high school, with no sexual experience to speak of. Since her line of work is Eroge voice acting, she can’t use previous experiences for her performances. Instead, she needs to use her imagination. At which points, the show decides to visualize her thoughts in fairly explicit scenes. I mean, we don’t actually see Penises go into Vaginas, but only because it’s censored. We go see Penis shaped glowy things go into mouths, which makes me wonder exactly what Japan’s censorship laws draw the line. There are also parts where Kanna needs to get into a “trance,” where she likes to suck on fingers to simulate fellatio. That got pretty weird. Without these scenes, I actually would recommend this to most anyone, as it’s a good “sex” themed comedy. But as it stands, I say look for the manga and see if its any good. That’s what I’m doing.

Watch it?: The closest I will ever get to reviewing a Hentai (4/5)

Prison School

Type: Boys are Gross

prison-school-10-02-15-11

Synopsis: Five boys enroll in a previously all-girl’s school. Awesome right? Really puts the “not if you were the last boy on Earth!” excuse to the test. Well, think again! Because the boys, in classic boy fashion, fly a little too close to the sun and get caught peeping at the girl’s bath. Now they must serve their punishment by being kept in the school’s questionably legal prison for a month.

Pros: Kinda like Shawshank Redemption, but if all the prison guards were replace by a busty girl who cannot physically button up her blouse. The entire show is about the 5 male protagonist being in “prison” while the Underground School Council think of schemes to get them expelled. What I loved was the character work, as each character has their own motivations and characteristics, and the small cast of 8-9 characters allows the show to utilize them efficiently. The show does a great job capturing the prisoners vs. guards aspects of Prison-centric fiction. In terms of story, the first arc is Kiyoshi trying to figure out a way to escape to go on a date. The second arc involves the student council using a snitch to set the boys up for expulsion. And the third arc is the boys getting out of their expulsion. Now, the original manga is famous for its gratuitous fan service, which is still in the show. What really surprise me is that for a show that exploits a lot of the kinkier aspects of humanity, like the fluids, I still found myself rooting for the boys. I bought into their brotherhood, and reminded me that male friendship is a beautiful thing, even if it means getting a stick up your butt from time to time.

Cons: The series adopts what I can only refer to as “awkward realism.” You know, the type of show that allows its characters to be pathetic, sexually desperate, and kinda sticky. Every episode has an “anime is weird” example. The fan service skews more towards the kinky S&M side, with some waterworks thrown in. Hell, one of the subplots is the protagonist and one of the Underground School Council members being stuck in a cycle of fate and urine. So proceed cautiously. I also wasn’t crazy about Meiko’s design, because I felt her boobs were a little too big. Like “how can she function?” big. I know she’s the mascot, but what looks good in print may not always look good in animation.

Watch it?: It will get weird on you (4/5)

High School DxD BorN

Type: Capitalization ErrORS

HS_DxD_3

Synopsis: In a series that has survived way longer than anyone thought it would, we see Issei Hyodo continuing to live the good life. He’s got a dragon armor powers, he’s attached to a very powerful demon family, and every girl he knows are smokin’ hot babes that like to sleep with him naked. This season, he gets a power boost, a fight with the god Loki, goes a little aggro, and gets another kiss from his demon king. All in all, par for the course.

Pros: Yet another season of High School DxD is upon us, and I’m OK with that. As stated before, I’m a fan of this series. It’s a perfectly harmless boob-comedy. This entry continues the series tradition of breast centric humor, some demon fighting, and generic melodrama. The season is divided into about 4 story arcs. The first is a training arc, where Akeno and Koneko get more backstory. This results in Koneko becoming yet another member of the “We love Issei” club. The second story arc involves fighting the god Loki. The third story arc involves Asia getting kidnapped and Issei going a little crazy. And the last story arc involves Rias. Each arc is serviceble, and I did get emotionally invested in the third and fourth arc, since they involved arguably the two main heroines. I watched the English Dub, and by this point, you can tell they’ve given up any semblance of seriousness, its amazing. As for characters, well, the only real standout moment was when Issei noted that he know the girls all liked him, but he’s still afraid of getting close to anyone after the events of Episode 1, Season 1. I thought that was a nice touch, and is something that’s stayed consistent throughout the series.

Cons: The thing about High School DxD is that it doesn’t get any better or worse. It must be popular, because it got an English Dub the same year it was released. The boob jokes are still front and center, the pacing is still wonky, and the show simply has too many characters to explore properly. I honestly forget some of their names. This season adds more characters, which doesn’t help. It also adds the norse mythology into the plot, which I’m sure won’t muddle anything. Story wise, my one real complaint would be the Koneko arc. Mostly because she falls for Issei way too fast. She goes from relative annoyance to undying love like someone flipped a switch or something. I feel that the series is drawing dangerously close to crossing the harem threshold of “girls chasing the main character” to “sister wives.” For me, that’s when most harems go from campy fun to problematic.

Watch it?: I wonder if they’ll be a fourth season? (3/5)

I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job.

Type: Don’t make sentences your title

20236

Synopsis: The year is…you know what? I don’t know what the year is. I guess it’s whatever year after the Demon Lord was defeated. This left the RPG like “Heroes” out of a job. Now derelict, one would be Hero got a reluctantly got job in retail. Where he’s surrounded by pretty anime girls. Who all have a crush on him. And wind up naked for one reason or another….I don’t know if I should feel sorry for him, or hate his guts.

Pros: This anime touches upon two important and surprising topics. First, it deals with is working in a small shop and having to compete with big mega stores. Anyone who has ever had a job, retail or otherwise, can sympathize with Raul and Phino. Having to learn the job rules, having to be nice to customers, having to deal with special events. Second, it sorta deals with the status of veterans. In the show, Raul was a trained “hero” who lost him purpose when the war against he Demon Kind ended. With nowhere left to go, he got a not-so-glamorous job. Raul, and other heroes depicted, feel out of place in peace time, with no real direction. Again, the title of the show has the word “reluctantly.” A part of him wishes he was still fighting. It may not have been an intentional thing, but I feel it does touch upon veteran life after war, especially since so many of today’s vet’s are young men and women. I also liked the setting of the show. A modernized RPG-like world was interesting, with monster becoming pests, and magical items turning into regular appliances. I also found Phino’s demon humor very funny.

Cons: This is a boob show. Let’s get that right out in the open. Phino has her boobs out on a regular basis. A third of the cast is very bouncy. Don’t let the opening fool you. The animation quality dips after the first episode. While the subplot of the show juggles the Store aspects and Raul’s Hero status, the main plot revolves around Phino’s hijinks as a rookie salesmen with big boobs. I doesn’t always pull it off. I also felt that this show was slooooooow. It’s based on a light novel, which usually produce not-so-quick stories. The show could have used less characters. Nova in particular seemed superfluous. The ending was also off. It didn’t feel earned, as the events were never alluded to. And the Amada Store arc is never quiet resolved, is it? I wasn’t a fan of Raul being criticized for “not following his dream” of being a hero. Mostly because THE WAR WAS OVER. He didn’t have a choice. It’s like hating someone for not following his dream of being a VHS salesmen. I suppose he could have just become a cop. Which begs the question, why didn’t he become a cop? He’s described as having high marks in Hero School. He’s skills are still good. Why not? I’m sure there are pretty anime girls at the precinct too.

Watch it?: I worked retail for 2 day. I would have stayed if there had been anime girls. (3/5)

Monster Musume

Type: This will save Anime!

monster-musume-screenshot-001-600x336

Synopsis: It’s exactly what you think.

Pros: This anime is about a group of monster girls living in the same house with a human as part of a cultural exchange between humanity and monsters. According to the premise, Humans and Monsters are allowed to live with one another, as long as they do not harm one another. This premise actually justifies a lot of the classic harem troupes that pop up in the show. The girls all fall for the main character, Kimihito, because he views them as people first, and is neither disgusted nor overly fascinated by them being half-monster. The shows does a great job showcasing some of the discrimination or unwanted gawking these girls get just for being around “regular” humans. Some critics even argue that this is an allegory for people with handicaps, or even immigrants. What I’m saying is that the show is much smarter than people might initially think. The girls all live under the same roof because the government wants to use their house as a control group for a new marriage law they are trying to pass, which also justifies the Kimihito pursuing a relationship with each monster girl. The animation is also astounding, to a surprising degree. I’m guessing that the “Monster Girl Harem” gimmick convinced the studio to sink most money into the budget. Each of the girls move differently due to their unique designs, with particular care going to Miia, the lamia with a very active snake body. And eagled eyed viewers may notice that Kimihito becomes more handsome whenever he does something kinds or generous, almost as if we’re seeing him from the girl’s point of view. The show also condenses a lot in one episode, something using a two-segment model for story telling. The show even managed to make The MON squad interesting (I usually just skip their chapters in the manga).

Cons: This is ECCHI as F!@$. There is no getting around that. Though not as ecchi as the manga, but this may change in the DVD release. This may very well be softcore hentai from a certain perspective. Because each of the girls is a different type of monster, a lot of pervy stuff derives from their unique physiology. For example, Miia the Lamia sheds her skin like a regular snake, which cause her to make…sounds….when she sheds. Papi the Harpie lays eggs, which causes her to make…sounds….when she’s ready to lay. Cerea needs help cleaning her horse body, causing her to make….sounds…when someones scurbs her backside. Are you seeing a pattern yet? Of course, the regular boob centric jokes are here as well. So the show’s biggest obstacle is that it’s totally NSFW. But I still consider it one of the strongest Harem shows in a long while. (p.s. I also don’t think Mera is a particularly good addition to the crew).

Senran Kagura: Ninja Flash

Type: Flashing what, I wonder? (hint: its their boobs)

Senran-Kagura-Ninja-Flash-review

Synopsis: There are five girls. They are ninjas. They have big boobs. There’s also five other girls. They are evil ninja. They also have big boobs. They fight, sometimes they’re friends, and other times they like to grope each other. You know, classic shinobi story telling.

Pros: The animation is real nice. Not just because extra care was put into the breast bounces, but the actual action was decent. I watched the English version, and the narrator had fun pointing out that the show was clearly fan service central. The gags are fairly solid, in a sexy/dirty kind of way. Nothing spectacular, but not horrible either.

Cons: So this is a fairly standard fan service show. Let’s get that straight right now. THEY LOSE CLOTHING IF THEY ARE ATTACKED. If you’re not into that, then you can live without this show. Even as a occasional fan of fan service, the show didn’t impress me. The jokes weren’t that funny (except for one pretty solid one in ep.3). The story was bland, with the ultimate lesson being friendship. I did find the “distinction” between the good and evil schools of shinobi being pretty interesting, since the good seemed pretty strict on rules, while the evil seemed pretty non-judgemental. I also would have bet money that the annoying innocent girl would have turned out to be super evil, but alas, that was not the case.
